(MENAFN) The US Justice Department on Monday announced the creation of a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” as part of a settlement agreement linked to litigation filed by President Donald Trump, members of his family, and the Trump Organization concerning the disclosure of tax returns and other alleged government misconduct.

According to reports, the agreement stems from a case involving claims that confidential tax-related information was improperly released.

The department said the new fund is designed to create an official mechanism for individuals and entities who argue they were targeted by politically driven “lawfare” or government “weaponization,” allowing them to pursue remedies that could include formal apologies and possible financial compensation.

The settlement resolves a lawsuit brought in federal court in the Southern District of Florida by Trump, Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization against the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service after the alleged leak of sensitive tax return data.
