Barghouti, Abbas’s Son Gets Elected to Fatah Leadership Body

(MENAFN) Jailed Palestinian political figure Marwan Barghouti and Yasser Abbas, the son of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, have both been elected to Fatah’s top decision-making body, according to reports following the conclusion of the group’s three-day congress.

Preliminary results released in an official statement indicated that 18 members were chosen for Fatah’s Central Committee, with Barghouti receiving the highest number of votes. He has been imprisoned by Israel since 2002.

Alongside him, Yasser Abbas secured a seat on the committee, as did several prominent figures, including Majed Faraj, head of the Palestinian Intelligence Service; Jibril Rajoub, head of the Palestinian Football Association; Hussein al-Sheikh, the movement’s vice president; and Zakaria Zubeidi, a former commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

The announcement came as Fatah wrapped up its eighth congress at the Palestinian presidential headquarters in Ramallah, according to reports.

In its closing statement, the movement said Palestinians continue to face what it described as “existential challenges,” pointing to the ongoing blockade on Gaza and intensified Israeli operations in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
