Japan Reaffirms UN-Centered Multilateralism in Talks with Guterres

(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reiterated Tokyo’s continued backing of multilateral cooperation centered around the United Nations during discussions held Monday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Tokyo, according to reports.

During the meeting, Guterres commended Japan’s role in international development initiatives and its longstanding stance on nuclear non-proliferation. He noted that Japan’s influence and credibility carry significant weight amid current global challenges.

The UN chief is on an official visit to Japan running from Sunday through Wednesday.

Earlier Monday, Guterres addressed attendees at an event titled Celebrating 70: Japan-UN Cooperation, Expo 2025 & the Future of Multilateralism, where he highlighted the growing importance of international cooperation and collective global action.

He underlined the necessity of demonstrating the practical value of multilateralism to ordinary people while also stressing stronger communication, collaboration, and joint efforts in shaping the future.

"The future of multilateralism will be secured by courage, reform and delivery. It will require institutions that reflect today’s world, not the world of eighty years ago. It will require financing that matches ambitions," Guterres said.
