Spanish Court Orders Tax Refund to Shakira in Dispute Case
(MENAFN) According to reports, Spain’s National Court has ruled in favor of Colombian singer Shakira in a long-standing tax dispute, ordering the country’s tax authorities to refund more than €60 million ($67 million) in payments, penalties, and interest related to the 2011 tax year.
The court found that Shakira was not considered a tax resident in Spain in 2011, concluding that authorities had failed to sufficiently prove she met the criteria for fiscal residency during that period, according to reports.
The ruling effectively overturns earlier tax assessments and penalties issued by Spain’s tax agency, which had alleged unpaid income and wealth taxes for that year.
In a statement shared with Spanish media following the decision, Shakira criticized the tax authorities and said she had been subjected to years of public scrutiny and reputational damage.
“After more than eight years enduring brutal public scrutiny, orchestrated campaigns to destroy my reputation and countless sleepless nights that affected my health and my family’s wellbeing, the National Court has finally set things straight,” she said.
She added: “There was never any fraud, and the administration itself was never able to prove otherwise, simply because it was not true,” according to reports.
