South Korea Calls on Iran to Clarify Attack on Vessel in Hormuz

(MENAFN) South Korea on Sunday called on Iran to explain its position regarding a recent attack involving a South Korean-operated cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports.

The issue was discussed during a phone conversation between South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as stated by reports citing Seoul’s Foreign Ministry.

During the talks, Cho informed his Iranian counterpart that South Korean authorities are continuing an additional investigation into the incident involving the HMM Namu, a Panama-flagged cargo ship operated by South Korean shipping company HMM Co. He also requested clarification from Tehran regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Cho emphasized the importance of protecting maritime safety and guaranteeing freedom of navigation for all vessels, including South Korean ships, in the strategically important waterway, which has faced major disruptions.

According to reports, Araghchi outlined Iran’s position on the broader regional situation and agreed on the importance of restoring secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He also called for a rapid resolution to the ongoing tensions.

Both sides agreed to remain in “close” contact in efforts to help safeguard South Korean ships and crew members operating in the area.
