Car Attack in Modena Leaves Dozens Injured, Police Investigating Motive

(MENAFN) At least 12 people were injured, including several in critical condition, after a vehicle struck pedestrians in the Italian city of Modena, according to reports.

Authorities say the incident involved a driver who was reportedly intoxicated and became violent during the event. According to local media accounts cited in reports, the suspect also had a knife and allegedly stabbed at least one person before being restrained by bystanders.

The motive behind the incident remains under investigation, with some local reports indicating that authorities have not ruled out all possible scenarios, including a potential security-related motive.

According to reports, emergency services airlifted two of the injured to hospital, and at least one victim sustained extremely severe injuries after being struck and pinned by the vehicle.

Eyewitness accounts cited in local media describe a car suddenly accelerating in the historic center of Modena and moving erratically through pedestrian areas at high speed before mounting sidewalks.

The suspect was later identified by local media as a 31-year-old Italian citizen of Moroccan origin. According to reports, he attempted to flee the scene on foot but was pursued and restrained by civilians before being handed over to police for questioning.

One bystander who helped subdue the suspect described being stabbed during the confrontation but managed to help disarm him with assistance from others, according to his statement reported in local press.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and the suspect’s condition at the time of the incident.
