Merz, Trump Hold Phone Talks on Iran

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, with both leaders aligning on the urgent need for diplomatic engagement with Tehran. The two sides agreed that "Iran must come to the negotiating table now."

According to a statement Merz posted on social media platform X, the call took place while Trump was airborne on his return journey from China, underscoring the urgency both leaders attached to the exchange despite the demanding travel schedules each faced.

Beyond the Iranian nuclear issue, the two leaders also addressed "a peaceful solution for Ukraine" as well as agenda items tied to the forthcoming NATO summit, Merz said.
