Iran Conflict Shifts Toward Prolonged War of Attrition—Analysts

(MENAFN) The ongoing conflict involving Iran is increasingly being described by analysts as a drawn-out war of attrition, where none of the involved parties appears close to achieving a decisive military outcome. Instead of a clear battlefield victory, observers say the confrontation is being shaped by sustained economic strain, political maneuvering, and long-term endurance strategies.

Even as sporadic fighting continues alongside diplomatic attempts to contain the escalation, specialists argue that the situation has evolved into a prolonged struggle in which success is measured less by territorial gains and more by which side can withstand the greatest pressure over time. This has led to growing expectations of an extended stalemate that drains resources and tests national resilience on multiple fronts.

“This has turned into a war of attrition -- a test of patience,” said Ahron Bregman, a senior teaching fellow at King’s College London. “The question is: who will break first?”

The conflict reportedly entered a new stage after Iran issued a response on Sunday to a US initiative intended to bring the fighting to an end. According to reports, Tehran delivered its reply through Pakistan, although it was quickly rejected by US President Donald Trump, who described it as “totally unacceptable.”

The escalation traces back to strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28, which prompted a wave of retaliatory attacks by Tehran targeting Israel and US-aligned interests in the Gulf region. The situation further intensified with disruptions in regional maritime activity, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, the human cost has continued to rise significantly, with more than 3,300 people killed in Iran and tens of thousands displaced. Additional fatalities have also been reported in Israel and several Gulf states as the conflict spreads across multiple fronts.
