Italian President Urges End to “Permanent State of War” in Middle East

(MENAFN) Italian President Sergio Mattarella has called for an end to what he described as a “permanent state of war” in the Middle East, according to reports citing the Quirinale Palace.

During a phone call with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Mattarella also said that attacks targeting personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were “unacceptable,” emphasizing the need to protect international peacekeeping forces.

As stated by reports, he underlined the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation in international waters amid growing regional instability.

His remarks come against the backdrop of continued tensions following earlier military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which triggered retaliatory responses and broader regional escalation, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to reports, a ceasefire was later reached through mediation efforts, though subsequent negotiations have failed to produce a lasting agreement, and diplomatic exchanges continue over proposed settlement frameworks.

The statement reflects growing European concern over the prolonged cycle of conflict affecting multiple countries across the Middle East and surrounding maritime routes.
