Air India Axes 6 Routes, Slashes 22 Others Amid Mideast Conflict

(MENAFN) Air India announced Wednesday it will halt operations on six international routes and reduce flight frequency across 22 additional services throughout the June–August 2026 period, as soaring jet fuel costs and airspace closures tied to the ongoing Middle East conflict continue to squeeze the airline's international network.

The carrier confirmed the sweeping schedule changes in an official statement, pointing to a convergence of operational and financial pressures forcing its hand.

"The adjustments have been made in response to a combination of factors, including continued airspace restrictions over certain regions and record-high jet fuel prices for international operations, which significantly impact the commercial viability of certain planned services," Air India said in a statement.

The airline moved to frame the disruptions as a proactive measure rather than a reactive one, emphasizing passenger welfare as central to the decision.

"These changes are aimed at improving network stability and reducing last-minute inconvenience to passengers," it said.

The cuts reflect a broader strain gripping international carriers, as conflict-driven airspace detours lengthen flight times and fuel burn, compounding the impact of already record-level jet fuel prices on route profitability across global aviation.
