Under The Slogan“Independent Media... Strong Society”: Etaf Al-Rudan Highlights From Amman The Role Of Community Media In Promoting Social Peace And Combating Disinformation
Media as a Tool for Conflict Resolution and Stability
Al-Rudan emphasized that the choice of the conference's slogan was not coincidental, but stemmed from the Network's prioritization of“society.” She explained that independent media is the strongest tool to confront the rise of racial, ethnic, and sectarian conflicts threatening human security. She noted that Jordan was a pioneer in launching the first independent community radio station in the Arab world, which has worked to empower journalists without discrimination between citizens, residents, or refugees.
Renewed International Trust in“AmmanNet” and“Radio Al-Balad”
During her speech, Al-Rudan announced that the Network's platforms (AmmanNet and Radio Al-Balad) had, for the second time, received the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) certification issued by Reporters Without Borders. She affirmed that this achievement strengthens confidence in broadcasting institutions and supports their independence amid the decline and bias witnessed in some global newsrooms, alongside the spread of false and misleading news across digital platforms.
Conference Agenda: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Radio
Al-Rudan outlined the main themes of the two-day conference, including exploring the future of radio journalism in light of the information technology and artificial intelligence revolution, and discussing the challenges posed by intensifying digital competition. She also pointed to closed sessions addressing newsroom realities and the role of local radio stations in countering rumors and building strong regional alliances.
Launch of AMARC Network for the Middle East and North Africa
The conference witnessed the announcement of a strategic step: the launch of the Community Radio Network for the Middle East and North Africa (AMARC), alongside the creation of a local community radio network. This initiative, envisioned by Professor Daoud Kuttab, aims to strengthen international networking and exchange of professional expertise to ensure the sustainability and impact of community media.
Messages on World Press Freedom Day and Independence Day
Al-Rudan concluded her remarks by linking the timing of the conference to national and global occasions, stressing the importance of its coincidence with World Press Freedom Day to promote diversity and freedom of expression.
She extended gratitude to partners and supporters, including the European Union, the embassies of Canada and Ireland, and the Taipei Office. She closed by congratulating the Jordanian leadership and people on the occasion of Independence Day, wishing continued security and stability for the Kingdom.
