Trump, Xi Set For High-Stakes Talks On Trade, Iran, AI In Beijing

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss Iran, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and nuclear weapons during Trump's two-day visit to China this week, according to US officials.

Trump is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday, ahead of meetings with Xi on Thursday and Friday. The visit will mark his first trip to China since 2017.

The leaders of the world's two largest economies will hold their first face-to-face talks in more than six months as both sides seek to stabilize relations strained by trade disputes, the US-Israeli conflict with Iran and other longstanding disagreements, Reuters reported.

US officials said Washington and Beijing are expected to agree on new forums aimed at facilitating bilateral trade and investment.

China is also expected to announce purchases linked to Boeing aircraft, as well as American agricultural and energy products.

One official said plans for a Board of Trade and a Board of Investment could be formally announced during the meetings, although further work would be required before the mechanisms become operational.

The two sides are also expected to discuss extending a temporary truce in their trade dispute that currently allows the flow of rare earth minerals from China to the United States. However, officials said it remains unclear whether an extension will be finalized this week.

“It doesn't expire yet,” one official told reporters.“I'm confident we'll announce any potential extension at the appropriate time.”

The Trump-Xi discussions are also expected to address several longstanding sources of tension between Washington and Beijing, including Iran, Taiwan and nuclear arms.

China maintains close ties with Iran and remains a major buyer of Iranian oil exports. Trump has urged Beijing to use its influence to encourage Tehran to reach an agreement with Washington and help end the conflict that escalated after US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.

The Trump administration has also continued to press China over its relationship with Russia.
