India Carries Out First Test Flight of New Glide Weapon Technology

(MENAFN) India has completed the first-ever test flight of its domestically developed glide weapon system, marking a notable step in its defense capabilities.

The trial was jointly carried out by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force, with the successful flight test conducted off the coast of Odisha on Thursday.

A key component of the system is the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) kit, designed to transform unguided warheads into highly accurate precision-guided weapons, as stated in an official release. Developed by the Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad along with other DRDO facilities, the kit is intended to significantly improve both the accuracy and destructive effectiveness of relatively low-cost munitions against land-based targets.

According to defense officials, production of these kits for use by the Indian Armed Forces has already begun.

These systems function by being attached to conventional unguided bombs, allowing them to be steered toward their targets after release. This capability also enables aircraft to launch strikes from safer distances, reducing exposure to enemy defenses.

Similar technologies are already in service in several countries, including Russia, the United States, China, Pakistan, Israel, and France.

The Israeli military, for example, has been widely using SPICE kits (smart, precise-impact, and cost-effective), which convert standard air-dropped bombs into precision-guided weapons, according to reports.

Separately, India’s Defense Acquisition Council, led by the defense minister, recently approved a large-scale procurement package valued at $8.7 billion. This includes the planned acquisition of SPICE kits, as reported by local media.

In related developments, reports have also indicated that Russia may have tested an enhanced glide bomb capable of engaging targets at distances of up to 150 kilometers. The country is also believed to be advancing work on a new glide bomb system known as the UMPB D-30SN.
