Zelenskyy Confirms Putin Talks Explored at Leader Level
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Monday that Kyiv has been actively exploring potential formats for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin "at the leadership level aimed at ending Russia's war."
Zelenskyy disclosed that Ukraine's chief negotiator Rustem Umerov had briefed him following a series of meetings with U.S. presidential representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
"Importantly, America remains engaged in diplomacy and, in particular, has acted as a mediator on the issue of a prisoner exchange," Zelenskyy said on U.S. social media platform X.
The Ukrainian president stressed that communications with Washington are continuing "at the appropriate level" as both sides work to finalize the terms of the exchange.
Zelenskyy also revealed that Umerov had reported back on outreach to nations interested in drone procurement agreements with Ukraine. Nearly 20 countries are currently engaged at various stages of the process, with four agreements already formalized and preliminary contracts now in preparation.
"With other countries, preparatory procedures are underway for political arrangements that will open the way for businesses," he said.
Zelenskyy noted that the agreements have already yielded early energy-related dividends — including fuel supplies to the domestic market — and projected "significant financial results" ahead.
"In addition to the Middle East and the Gulf, the South Caucasus, and Europe, we will soon launch this new security cooperation within the framework of Drone Deals with another part of the world as well," he said.
The disclosures follow talks held in Miami last week, where Witkoff, Kushner, and Umerov convened to discuss accelerating the diplomatic process and aligning the next steps toward a peace settlement. The meeting took place against a backdrop of stalled negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, with the Russia-Ukraine conflict drawing diminished global attention in recent months as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has dominated international focus.
In the wake of the Miami talks, President Donald Trump announced Friday that Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement on a three-day ceasefire and a 1,000-to-1,000 prisoner exchange — a development he characterized as a potential milestone on the path to ending the war.
On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared his readiness to meet Zelenskyy in any third country, stipulating however that such a meeting would only take place to formally conclude a peace agreement bringing the four-year conflict to a close.
