14 Killed, 3 Pregnant Women Among Dead in Nigeria Attack
(MENAFN) At least 14 people — including three pregnant women — were killed when armed assailants launched a midnight assault on the Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area in Nigeria's Plateau State, residents told media on Friday.
The attackers descended on the settlement around midnight as residents slept, opening fire indiscriminately and sending scores of people fleeing into the darkness. Plateau State has long been a flashpoint for cyclical violence rooted in farmer-herder disputes, communal rivalries, and retaliatory attacks that have claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.
Resident Raphael Ebi, who narrowly escaped through surrounding bushland, recounted the horror of the assault to media.
"They moved from one house to another attacking innocent people," he said.
Fellow resident Chigoji Ameh confirmed that three pregnant women were among those who lost their lives, with a number of others sustaining injuries during the rampage.
Danjuma Auta, Secretary General of the Community Development Association, did not mince words in his condemnation of the bloodshed.
"We are deeply saddened by this continuous bloodshed in our communities," Auta said. "Security agencies must intensify efforts to protect rural communities and ensure that those behind these attacks are arrested and brought to justice."
Auta also sounded the alarm over the chronic insecurity plaguing Bassa Local Government Area and wider Plateau State, cautioning that the relentless cycle of attacks is compounding an already dire humanitarian and security crisis across affected communities.
Survivors have since scattered to neighboring areas, with many families now displaced in the aftermath of the violence. While authorities had yet to issue an official statement as of Friday afternoon, security sources confirmed to media that police units had been dispatched to the site.
Plateau State Police Command spokesman SP Alabo Alfred told Anadolu that the situation has "been put under control. Our officers are working with residents of the affected community."
The latest massacre has renewed alarm over the persistence of deadly armed violence in Plateau State, a region that has endured years of lethal communal clashes with no clear end in sight.
