Starmer Says He Takes Responsibility After “Very Tough” Election Results

(MENAFN) The British prime minister says he takes responsibility for “not walking away” and for avoiding what he described as national chaos following last week’s difficult election results, according to remarks made at a London event.

Keir Starmer describes the outcome as “very tough,” acknowledging losses suffered by his party and expressing personal accountability for the results.

“The election results last week were tough, very tough. We lost some brilliant labor representatives; that hurts, and it should hurt. I get it, I feel it, and I take responsibility,” he says.

Starmer notes that there are internal critics within his party but insists he will work to prove them wrong.

“I take responsibility for navigating us through a world that is more dangerous than at any time in my life, and I take responsibility for not walking away, not plunging our country into chaos.”

According to reports, he also uses the speech to signal a shift in foreign policy direction, saying he wants to rebuild ties with Europe and place Britain “at the heart of Europe.”

He further argues that Brexit has left the country “poorer” and “weaker,” while claiming that migration levels have “gone through the roof.”

The comments come after a series of regional elections in Scotland, Wales, and 136 English local authorities, which represent the largest set of polls since the 2024 general election.

According to reports, the Labour Party suffers significant losses in the Welsh Senedd, while the Scottish National Party retains control of the Scottish Parliament for a fifth consecutive term.
