Texas Police Launches Probe After Six Bodies Found in Rail Yard Boxcar

(MENAFN) Six people are found dead inside a cargo train boxcar in Laredo, Texas, prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths, according to reports.

The bodies are discovered at a Union Pacific rail yard around 3:30 p.m. local time (2030GMT) on Sunday after a routine inspection of a railcar, following a call from a worker earlier that afternoon, according to reports.

A public information officer with the Laredo Police Department, Jose Espinoza, said the discovery takes place during standard checks at the site. According to reports, police confirm that no survivors are found.

“The circumstances of their deaths are unknown,” police spokesperson Joe Baeza is quoted as saying, adding that the investigation is still at a very early stage.

“It’s a very early phase of the investigation. There’s not a lot to reveal right now,” he said.

Authorities say the identities, ages, and immigration status of the deceased have not yet been determined. Espinoza describes the incident as deeply tragic, saying, “It’s a very unfortunate event… It was too many lives that were lost.”

According to reports, Union Pacific says it is “saddened by the incident” and is cooperating with law enforcement.

US Customs and Border Protection confirms that the investigation is being handled by local police, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Texas Rangers, as authorities continue to determine what led to the deaths.
