Germany Rejects Proposal to Make Schröder Mediator in Ukraine Peace Talks
(MENAFN) Germany has rejected a Russian proposal suggesting former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a possible mediator in negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, according to reports.
Ahead of an EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, Germany’s EU minister Gunther Krichbaum said Schröder would not be seen as an impartial figure due to his long-standing relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“A mediator must be accepted by both sides, and that seems to be lacking,” Krichbaum said.
“Former Chancellor Schroeder has not done things in the past that would position him today as a neutral mediator, as an honest broker.”
He added that while personal relationships can exist in diplomacy, they complicate perceptions of neutrality.
“This certainly applies to us as well, on the part of the German government, but the important thing first and foremost is that a mediator, must be acceptable to both sides,” he said.
According to reports, Russia’s proposal was put forward by Putin on Saturday, when he indicated Schröder as his preferred choice for facilitating talks aimed at ending the war.
Schröder, who served as German chancellor from 1998 to 2005, has faced sustained criticism in Germany over his close ties to Putin after leaving office.
