Eurovision Draws Fresh Backlash Over Israel’s Participation

(MENAFN) The upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in Vienna is facing renewed political controversy as criticism surrounding Israel’s participation intensifies across parts of Europe.

This year’s competition, marking the 70th edition of Eurovision, is taking place at the Wiener Stadthalle, with semi-finals scheduled for May 12 and 14 and the grand final set for May 16. Austria is hosting the event after singer JJ won the 2025 contest with the song Wasted Love.

While preparations for the music competition are underway, debate over Israel’s inclusion has once again become a central issue surrounding the event. Demonstrations, boycott campaigns, and criticism from activists, media workers, and public figures have continued to spread in several European countries.

Among the critics is Claudio Ciccone, a representative of Italy’s Unione Sindacale di Base trade union affiliated with state broadcaster RAI. He argued that Eurovision has increasingly become a space where politics and entertainment overlap.

“The Eurovision Song Contest should be a moment of cultural unity, of peace, of cultures talking to each other. But when a delegation like the Israeli one is brought there to present a good face of its government to the world, that should not be tolerated,” Ciccone said.

Criticism has intensified amid ongoing international debate surrounding the conflict in Gaza. Opponents of Israel’s participation have questioned why the country remains in Eurovision while Russia continues to be excluded following the war in Ukraine.

Reflecting that argument, Ciccone stated: “If Eurovision excluded Russia over what happened in Ukraine, why did they not exclude Israel for what it did in Palestine, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria? So, I think it’s political.”

The controversy has added further political tension to a contest that has increasingly found itself at the center of wider geopolitical debates in recent years.
