Starmer Defends Leadership After Labour Election Setbacks
(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he accepts responsibility for Labour’s performance in last week’s elections, while rejecting calls for him to step aside and warning against political instability.
Speaking at an event in London, Starmer described the results as “very tough,” acknowledging the loss of several Labour representatives. He said, “The election results last week were tough, very tough. We lost some brilliant labor representatives; that hurts, and it should hurt. I get it, I feel it, and I take responsibility.”
He added that he is aware of internal criticism, including from members of his own party, but insisted he intends to prove his critics wrong. “I have got some doubters, including in my own party,” he said, adding that he remains committed to his role.
Starmer emphasized that his priority is maintaining political stability during what he described as a more dangerous global environment. He stated, “I take responsibility for navigating us through a world that is more dangerous than at any time in my life, and I take responsibility for not walking away, not plunging our country into chaos.”
The prime minister also reiterated his intention to strengthen ties with Europe, saying he aims to position Britain more closely with the continent’s political and economic framework.
In his remarks, he criticized the long-term effects of Brexit, arguing that it has made the United Kingdom “poorer” and “weaker,” while also claiming that migration levels have increased significantly since the country left the European Union.
The elections resulted in significant political shifts across Scotland, Wales, and numerous local councils in England. Labour suffered major losses in the Welsh Senedd, while the Scottish National Party maintained its dominant position in Scotland for an unprecedented fifth consecutive term.
At the same time, Reform UK made substantial gains, securing more than 1,450 council seats and continuing its recent rise in local politics following earlier electoral breakthroughs.
