Philippines' Sara Duterte Impeached for Second Time in Two Years
(MENAFN) The Philippine House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Monday to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, marking the second time in two years the embattled official has faced such action from the lower chamber of parliament.
Duterte, 47, faces serious allegations of graft alongside charges stemming from public threats she allegedly directed at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The parliament's justice committee cleared the path for Monday's vote after it "found probable cause in the complaints" filed against her.
Of the 318-seat House of Representatives, 255 lawmakers cast votes in favor of impeachment — a figure that surpassed the 215 House members who had signed Duterte's original impeachment complaint the previous year. Twenty-six representatives voted in opposition, nine abstained, and at least 28 lawmakers were absent from the proceedings entirely.
The threshold required to impeach a vice president stands at just 106 votes, meaning Monday's tally exceeded the constitutional bar by a wide margin.
The case now moves to the Senate, where Duterte will face a formal trial that could end either in her conviction or full acquittal, according to media.
The outcome carries significant political weight — Duterte is widely regarded as a frontrunner for the Philippines' 2028 presidential race, making the Senate trial a potentially defining moment for the country's political landscape in the years ahead.
