Russia Celebrates Victory Day Anniversary with Parades

(MENAFN) Russia observed the 81st anniversary of its World War II victory over Nazi Germany on May 9, with large-scale commemorations led by a military parade in Moscow’s Red Square.

Throughout the day, smaller parades and remembrance events were held across various parts of the country, honoring those who died during what is referred to in Russia as the Great Patriotic War. The conflict cost the Soviet Union an estimated 27 million lives, a figure widely cited in connection with its historical impact.

Victory Day continues to be regarded as one of Russia’s most significant public holidays.

Following a series of discussions with international leaders, President Vladimir Putin addressed journalists, commenting on several geopolitical issues including Ukraine, tensions involving Iran, Russia’s relations with Western states, and recent contacts with US President Donald Trump. He also stated that the situation in Ukraine “is heading towards completion” and described conditions under which a meeting with Vladimir Zelensky could potentially take place.

Beyond Russia, commemorative marches were held in multiple cities across Europe, the United States, the Middle East, and Asia. Participants in these events carried portraits of relatives who fought in the Second World War, reflecting the tradition associated with Victory Day.

In addition, reports noted that Russian military personnel near the frontline had taken steps to restore Soviet-era memorials and war cemeteries.

As celebrations concluded, fireworks lit up the night sky above the Main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces, displaying colors of white, blue, and red and drawing large crowds.

With these events, Victory Day observances came to an end in Russia and abroad.
