Rosatom Says Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant Operating Normally

(MENAFN) Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has reported that Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant continues to operate without disruption despite ongoing regional tensions and reports of military activity involving the United States and Iran.

According to Rosatom’s CEO Aleksey Likhachev, Russian specialists on site have not observed any recent strikes near the facility, and conditions at the plant are described as “generally calm.” He noted that Unit 1, the only active reactor at Bushehr, is still running at full operational capacity.

The Russian-built facility plays a key role in Iran’s energy sector and contains significant quantities of nuclear fuel. Likhachev has previously cautioned that any attack on the site could result in consequences reaching at least a “regional” scale due to the potential risks involved.

Recent developments in the region have included reported US military strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, an area close to the strategic maritime route. Iran has accused Washington of violating a ceasefire agreement and has responded with actions against US naval assets in the region. The Bushehr plant lies approximately 250 kilometers northwest of the Strait.

In earlier months, Rosatom significantly reduced its presence at the site, scaling down from around 700 personnel to approximately 20 following reports of nearby explosions and strikes. One reported incident involved a projectile landing near the perimeter of the facility, resulting in the death of a security guard.

Despite this, Rosatom leadership has indicated that the company is ready to quickly restore its full technical team at Bushehr once it assesses that the security situation is stable enough to ensure staff safety.
