Report Claims Israel Operated Secret Desert Base in Iraq

(MENAFN) A report has alleged that Israel established a covert military installation in the Iraqi desert to support air operations directed at Iran, with the site reportedly playing a logistical and operational role during a broader regional military campaign.

According to the report, citing US officials familiar with the matter, the facility was constructed shortly before a joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran began in late February. The base is said to have been used by Israeli special forces and functioned as a support hub for air force operations, including logistics coordination and search-and-rescue preparations for downed pilots.

The installation was reportedly known to US authorities. Its location in the Iraqi desert was kept highly restricted, but it eventually came under suspicion after unusual activity was noticed in early March. Reports describe a local shepherd observing frequent helicopter movements and alerting authorities, which led Iraqi forces to investigate.

When Iraqi troops approached the area, they allegedly came under fire in an incident that resulted in one soldier being killed and two others injured. Iraqi officials initially blamed external forces, suggesting foreign military involvement had taken place without coordination or authorization from Baghdad.

A senior Iraqi military official later stated that the operation appeared to involve a force operating with aerial support beyond the capabilities of Iraqi units, describing it as an unapproved and highly sensitive activity.

The report further claims the base played a role in facilitating Israeli air operations conducted at long range against Iranian targets, with aircraft reportedly carrying out extensive strikes over a period of several weeks. The Iraqi location is said to have provided a forward-position advantage closer to Iranian airspace.

Israeli defense authorities did not issue any public comment on the claims. The report has added to broader discussions about the regional spillover of tensions between Israel and Iran, and the extent of external involvement in surrounding conflict zones.
