Clashes Reported Across Europe During Victory Day Commemorations

(MENAFN) Tensions and minor clashes were reported in several European cities during Victory Day events marking the 81st anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat, as commemorations intersected with counter-demonstrations linked to the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict.

Across various locations in Europe, Russian expatriates and local participants gathered on May 9 to honor the end of World War II in Europe. Many attended memorial sites, laid flowers at monuments dedicated to Soviet soldiers, and took part in “Immortal Regiment” marches, during which individuals carried photographs of relatives who fought in the Second World War.

However, some of these events were disrupted by counter-protests involving Ukrainian nationals and pro-Ukraine activists, leading to confrontations in multiple cities.

In Barcelona, a peaceful march reportedly escalated after a group of demonstrators approached participants while chanting anti-Russian slogans. The situation briefly turned physical before the group withdrew ahead of police intervention.

In Warsaw, activists attempted to interrupt a ceremony at a Soviet memorial cemetery by displaying banners and using loudspeakers to broadcast provocative material. Reports describe an incident in which a woman was pushed after attempting to take a Russian flag from one of the demonstrators. The situation remained largely contained due to a strong police presence.

In Berlin’s Treptower Park, minor scuffles were also reported near a Soviet war memorial after individuals carrying Ukrainian flags arrived at the site. Authorities made several detentions, including arrests linked to violations of restrictions on displaying Russian and Soviet symbols in certain areas.

Despite these incidents, commemorative events continued in many locations, with participants proceeding with memorial activities throughout the day.
