Telegram Co-Founder Accuses France of Hypocrisy Over Case Against X

(MENAFN) Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov has criticized French authorities, accusing them of hypocrisy after prosecutors widened a criminal investigation involving Elon Musk’s social media platform X.

According to Durov, French officials are alleging misconduct by the platform while engaging in similar practices themselves. He made the comments following reports that prosecutors in Paris were pursuing additional charges against X, including claims related to illegal AI-generated sexual deepfakes produced by its Grok system, along with accusations of unlawful data collection and other alleged violations.

In a public statement, Durov wrote that “The French government is accusing X of the very things the French government itself is doing,” and urged international support for the platform, describing the legal actions as an “immoral assault” on the company.

French authorities originally opened their investigation earlier in the year, citing concerns over algorithmic bias, data practices, and the alleged dissemination of synthetic explicit material generated by artificial intelligence, including content involving minors.

Elon Musk has denied any wrongdoing and has characterized the legal proceedings as politically motivated. In parallel developments, US officials reportedly declined a request from French investigators to assist with the case, amid broader tensions over regulation of speech and technology platforms.

The situation has drawn wider attention in the context of ongoing debates over digital regulation, with some US political figures criticizing European approaches to online speech enforcement.

Separately, Durov’s own platform Telegram has faced legal scrutiny in France. He was previously detained at a Paris airport in 2024 and later indicted on multiple charges related to alleged misuse of the platform by third parties. Although the investigation remains ongoing, he was subsequently permitted to leave the country.

Durov has consistently rejected the accusations and argued that regulatory pressure on messaging and social media services represents an erosion of free expression and digital rights.
