Six Found Dead in Train Boxcar in Texas

(MENAFN) Six individuals were discovered dead inside a freight train boxcar at a Union Pacific rail yard in Laredo, Texas, authorities confirmed, as investigators work to determine the cause of death in what officials are calling an early-stage inquiry.

The grim discovery was made Sunday at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time (2030 GMT), following a call placed roughly 30 minutes earlier by a rail yard employee who alerted authorities, according to Laredo Police Department public information officer Jose Espinoza, as reported by media.

Police spokesperson Joe Baeza confirmed that little is known at this stage about how the six individuals died.

"The circumstances of their deaths are unknown," Baeza was quoted as saying, noting the probe is still in its infancy.

"It's a very early phase of the investigation. There's not a lot to reveal right now," he said.

Investigators confirmed no survivors were found at the scene. The ages and immigration status of the deceased remain unestablished, authorities added.

Espinoza expressed grief over the loss of life, stating: "It's a very unfortunate event… It was too many lives that were lost."

Union Pacific issued a statement saying it was "saddened by the incident" and is cooperating with law enforcement.

A multi-agency response has since been launched. US Customs and Border Protection confirmed the case is being jointly investigated by local police, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Texas Rangers.
