UN Urges Immediate Release of Detained Aid Flotilla Members

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, the UN Human Rights Office appealed to Israel to “immediately and unconditionally release” two individuals from the Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla who were apprehended at sea and are currently being held in Israel “without charge.”

In an official statement, spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan declared, “Israel must immediately and unconditionally release Global Sumud Flotilla members Saif Abukeshek and Thiago de Avila, who were detained in international waters and brought to Israel where they continue to be held without charge.”

He emphasized that offering support and attempting to deliver aid should not be treated as a criminal act, stating, “It is not a crime to show solidarity and attempt to bring humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population in Gaza, who are in dire need of it.”

Al-Kheetan further highlighted claims of “severe mistreatment” concerning the detainees, stressing the importance of accountability. “Disturbing accounts of severe mistreatment of Abukeshek and de Avila must be investigated, and those responsible must be brought to justice,” he said.

Additionally, he called for Israel to cease practices such as “arbitrary detention” and the expansive use of terrorism-related laws, arguing that such measures conflict with established international human rights standards.

He also urged Israeli authorities to lift the blockade on Gaza and permit the entry of humanitarian aid into the territory “in sufficient amounts.”
