Hegseth Says Iran Ceasefire Still Holds, Trump to Judge Any Escalation

(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated Tuesday that the ceasefire with Iran remains in place, emphasizing that any determination of a breach will ultimately be made by President Donald Trump, according to reports.

Speaking at a Pentagon briefing alongside a senior military official, Hegseth said, “No, the ceasefire is not over,” while stressing that the situation is still being closely evaluated.

He explained that “Ultimately, the President (Trump) is going to make a decision whether anything were to escalate into a violation of a ceasefire, but certainly we would urge Iran to be prudent in the actions that they take, to keep that underneath this threshold.”

Hegseth added that although tensions persist, the truce continues for now. “So right now, the ceasefire certainly holds, but we're going to be watching very, very closely.”

Addressing maritime activity, he noted that two US commercial vessels, escorted by American destroyers, successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz, signaling that navigation routes remain open.

He further claimed that “Iranians are embarrassed by this fact. They said they control the strait. They do not so,” and reiterated that a US-imposed blockade in the area is still active.

“In fact, six ships tried to run the blockade out of Iranian ports as ‘Project Freedom’ commenced, and they were all turned around,” Hegseth said.
