US Lawmaker Urges Arming Iranian Civilians as Alternative Strategy

(MENAFN) A senior US senator, Lindsey Graham, has proposed that President Donald Trump supply large quantities of weapons to civilians in Iran as a way to ignite internal conflict within the country.

The suggestion was framed as an alternative to deploying American troops on the ground.

During an interview with Sean Hannity, Graham described the idea as a “Second Amendment solution” for Iran. He argued that arming the population could shift the balance internally. “If I were President Trump and I were Israel, I would load the Iranian people up with weapons so they can go to the streets armed and turn the tide of battle inside Iran,” he said.

In response, Hannity pointed out that similar tactics had already been attempted previously.

Reports indicate that Washington had supplied firearms to protesters during unrest that spread across Iran in late 2025. Trump later acknowledged that “a lot” of weapons had been sent, but claimed they were ultimately lost or taken. Despite such efforts, attempts to destabilize the Iranian leadership have not succeeded, even following the killing of Ali Khamenei earlier in the year.

Graham nevertheless pushed for repeating the approach. “Do it again,” he insisted, adding that “I love the idea of empowering the Iranian people with weapons.” He suggested that such a move would make conditions “hell” for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, noting that “it’s one thing to be bombed by America. It’s another thing to have your neighbor shoot back at you.”

The senator’s remarks are consistent with his long-standing hardline stance toward Iran. Over the years, he has repeatedly advocated for dismantling the country’s military capabilities and has called for extreme measures against its leadership.

Separately, geopolitical analyst Christopher Helali, who recently visited Iran, argued in comments cited by reports that the broader objective of US and Israeli actions is “not about liberating the Iranian people” but rather “destroying Iran’s future.” He pointed to strikes on civilian infrastructure, including healthcare and educational institutions, as evidence supporting this claim.
