Syria Announces First Trials of Former Assad-Era Officials

(MENAFN) Syria is preparing to initiate the first court proceedings against senior figures from the former administration of Bashar Assad, as confirmed by the country’s Justice Ministry.

According to a statement shared on social media, the initial cases will be linked to events in Daraa, a city widely recognized as the starting point of the protest movement that eventually escalated into a full-scale civil war. The ministry presented the trials as an important move toward accountability and transitional justice.

The unrest in Daraa originally began after the arrest and reported mistreatment of 15 students who were accused of writing anti-government slogans during the wider wave of Arab Spring protests. The situation quickly intensified when security forces opened fire on demonstrators, leading to a nationwide uprising that developed into a 13-year conflict. The war resulted in the deaths of over half a million people.

In 2020, a ceasefire agreement mediated by Moscow and Ankara temporarily reduced large-scale fighting for several years. However, late 2024 saw a rapid escalation when a rebel coalition led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), described as an Al-Qaeda-linked group, launched a brief but decisive offensive that removed Assad from power. A transitional administration led by HTS figure Ahmed al-Sharaa was then established, taking control in a country still deeply affected by internal division and external involvement, including by the United States.

The Syrian Justice Ministry stated in a post that the judicial process is being prepared for what it described as a long-awaited moment for victims. It said public hearings will begin next week targeting individuals associated with the former government.

“The Criminal Court in Damascus is preparing for the moment long awaited by victims: the launch of public trials next week for the henchmen and criminals of the fallen [Assad] regime,” Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said in a post on X.

He further stated, “The first trials for the henchmen of the defunct regime will focus on the events of Daraa. Just as the beginning was in Daraa, the cradle of the revolution, justice demands that it also serve as the launchpad for the path of transitional justice.”
