Russia Delegation Arrives in N. Korea for Memorial Opening
(MENAFN) North Korea has inaugurated a memorial museum in its capital dedicated to soldiers who died fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, as a high-ranking Russian parliamentary delegation touched down in Pyongyang for the occasion, a state news agency reported Sunday.
The Russian contingent, headed by Vyacheslav Volodin — speaker of the State Duma, Russia's lower legislative chamber — arrived Saturday and was received by Jo Yong-won, chairman of North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly.
The newly unveiled facility, formally named the Memorial Museum of Combat Feats at the Overseas Military Operations, stands as Pyongyang's official tribute to its fallen servicemen deployed abroad in support of Moscow's war effort.
On the sidelines of the visit, Jo and Volodin convened formal discussions centered on deepening inter-parliamentary ties and broadening bilateral cooperation, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to honoring agreements reached between their respective heads of state.
The visit underscores a rapidly deepening alliance between the two nations — one that has evolved dramatically over the past decade and was codified through a landmark comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed in 2024. Under its terms, both countries are bound to provide mutual military assistance should either face armed aggression from a third party.
The scale of North Korean military involvement in the Ukraine conflict has steadily grown. In August 2025, Pyongyang deployed roughly 1,000 military engineers to Russia's Kursk region, tasked with clearing landmines left behind from clashes with Ukrainian forces.
That mission followed an earlier and far larger mobilization. South Korea's national intelligence agency estimates that approximately 15,000 North Korean combat troops were sent to bolster Russia's frontline operations — and that the deployment has already cost Pyongyang an estimated 2,000 soldiers' lives.
