India, Pakistan Denounce Shooting Incident Near White House Dinner

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated from the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, DC, on Saturday evening after a shooting incident erupted outside the venue, drawing swift condemnation from world leaders including the heads of government of India and Pakistan.

The couple were unharmed. The incident occurred outside the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile gathering was underway. Senior administration figures including Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were also in attendance at the time.

Trump Speaks Out
Trump confirmed that one individual had been taken into custody following the incident, offering a characteristically blunt assessment of the perpetrator. He described the suspect as a "very sick person" and a "thug" who had attacked the US Constitution — language that signaled the president's intent to frame the episode in politically charged terms.

Global Leaders Rally Around Trump
The shooting prompted an immediate wave of international reaction, with two of South Asia's most prominent leaders among the first to respond publicly.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to express relief at the outcome. "I extend my best wishes for their continued safety and well-being," Modi said. "Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned."

Modi added that he was relieved to learn that President Trump, First Lady Melania, and Vice President Vance "are safe and unharmed."

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the episode in the starkest possible terms, characterizing it as "a heinous act of terrorism."

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed that condemnation, saying he was "deeply shocked" by the "disturbing" shooting incident. "Relieved to know that President Trump, the First Lady, and other attendees are safe. My thoughts and prayers are with him, and I wish him continued safety and well-being," Sharif said.
