Mexico Condemns Unauthorized Role of US Agents After Deadly Incident
(MENAFN) Mexico’s Security Cabinet expressed regret over the deaths of two US agents while underscoring that their actions took place without official approval, thereby breaching national law, according to reports.
In an official statement, authorities extended condolences over the fatalities, which also included two local personnel, following an incident in Chihuahua on April 19.
"The Security Cabinet expresses its deepest sorrow over the death of four individuals—two state personnel and two U.S. agents—during the accident that occurred in Chihuahua on April 19, and extends its most sincere condolences and solidarity to their families, coworkers, and loved ones during this difficult time,"
The US agents lost their lives near the location of an operation targeting drug production facilities. Although there were initial denials regarding their participation, Mexican officials later confirmed that the agents had indeed taken part in the mission.
Authorities clarified that one of the individuals was in Mexico under a visitor status, while the other possessed a diplomatic permit. However, neither had the necessary authorization to engage in operational activities within the country.
"Mexican legislation is clear: it does not allow the participation of foreign agents in operations within national territory,"
The issue is set against a broader legal framework introduced by Claudia Sheinbaum in 2025, which explicitly bars foreign personnel from conducting enforcement or investigative actions inside Mexico. These reforms were implemented after Donald Trump proposed covert and military measures to combat drug cartels.
Under the updated laws, any foreign involvement in such activities requires explicit authorization and coordination with Mexican authorities. Violations can lead to severe penalties, including pretrial detention.
Tensions surrounding cross-border security cooperation have been ongoing, particularly as Trump previously advocated for direct intervention strategies, while Mexico has emphasized collaboration and intelligence-sharing as the preferred approach to tackling organized crime.
Officials added that investigations into the incident are ongoing, being carried out in coordination with relevant authorities and the US Embassy in Mexico.
