The President, who had been seated at the dais alongside First Lady Melania Trump and Weijia Jiang - CBS News correspondent and president of the White House Correspondents' Association - was swiftly ushered from the ballroom by security personnel as attendees dived for cover beneath tables. The room was immediately sealed, according to Independent report.

Among those present at the time of the incident were several of the most senior figures in the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth - making the security breach one of the most alarming to occur at a public event involving the President and his cabinet in recent memory.

The dinner, held annually to celebrate the First Amendment and the freedom of the press, had drawn particular attention this year as Trump was attending for the first time as a sitting president, ending a years-long boycott of the event. What had been anticipated as a charged but celebratory evening ended instead in evacuation and emergency response, with the full circumstances of the shooting still emerging.
