Lavrov Urges Global Pushback Against ‘Electoral Neocolonialism’
(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called on what he described as the “global majority” to resist Western influence in elections worldwide, particularly efforts by the US and EU involving international observers, according to reports.
He made the remarks in a video address to participants of an international conference held in Moscow on Tuesday focused on election observation and analysis. The event gathered around 150 participants, including politicians, academics, and experts from 60 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and was dedicated to discussing concerns over what organizers described as Western involvement in electoral processes.
The conference was organized by the Center for International Interaction and Cooperation, with backing from the Presidential Grants Foundation and Russia’s cultural exchange agency Rossotrudnichestvo.
Lavrov argued that Western countries interfere in the domestic affairs of others not only through political pressure or so-called “Color Revolutions,” but also through what he termed “electoral neocolonialism.”
He further stated that what he called the “global minority” relies on election monitors who allegedly conduct biased assessments and later present their findings as representing the consensus of the international community, often amplified by supportive media outlets.
Russia, he said, rejects such practices and will not support their continuation. He added that Moscow, together with aligned partners, is advocating for alternative standards that would allow what he described as more impartial evaluation of elections, particularly in countries across the Global South and East.
The conference also marked the beginning of efforts to establish a new international non-governmental platform focused on electoral and political monitoring. According to organizers, the proposed body would deploy observation missions aimed at assessing the transparency and legitimacy of elections while promoting the principle of non-interference in domestic political processes.
