UN Chief Hails U.S.-Iran Truce Extension

(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed Washington's decision to extend its ceasefire with Iran, with his spokesman voicing strong support for continued diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

"This is an important step toward de-escalation and creating critical space for diplomacy and confidence-building between Iran and the United States. We encourage all parties to build on this momentum, refrain from actions that could undermine the ceasefire, and engage constructively in negotiations to reach a sustainable and lasting resolution," spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in a statement Tuesday.

The UN chief also expressed full backing for Pakistan's role as a facilitator in advancing further talks between Washington and Tehran, expressing hope that those efforts would help lay the groundwork for a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict, the statement added.

The development follows an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday that the ceasefire with Iran would be extended indefinitely, with no end date attached — a move that UN officials signaled could prove pivotal in sustaining the fragile diplomatic opening between the two longtime adversaries.
