China Calls for Ceasefire, Free Shipping Through Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) According to reports, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in the context of escalating tensions involving the United States and Iran, while also stressing the importance of ensuring uninterrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Xi made the remarks during a phone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, where he emphasized that maintaining normal passage through the strategic waterway is vital for both regional states and the wider international community.
He also reiterated China’s support for a regional framework based on cooperation, security, and shared development, describing it as a model in which countries in the region manage their own affairs and work toward long-term stability and peace.
In his comments, Xi urged all parties to pursue an immediate halt to hostilities and a broader ceasefire, while encouraging diplomatic solutions over military escalation. He also expressed Beijing’s readiness to strengthen strategic ties and practical cooperation with Saudi Arabia.
The call is reported to be the first high-level contact between the Chinese president and a Middle Eastern leader since the onset of renewed conflict involving the United States and Iran earlier this year.
At the same time, diplomatic activity surrounding the conflict continues, with further discussions between US and Iranian representatives expected in Pakistan following earlier rounds of talks that did not produce a final agreement. Mediation efforts have involved regional actors aiming to stabilize the situation and maintain a temporary reduction in hostilities, although key disagreements remain unresolved.
