Powerful Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Waves in Northern Japan
(MENAFN) According to reports, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude struck Japan on Monday evening local time, triggering tsunami waves across parts of the country’s northern and northeastern coastline.
As stated by reports, the tremor was recorded at around 0752GMT, with its epicenter located roughly 71 miles offshore from Miyako in Iwate Prefecture, according to the US Geological Survey. Japanese authorities, however, measured the quake at magnitude 7.5.
Reports indicate that the Japan Meteorological Agency issued warnings for possible additional earthquakes of similar strength in the coming days.
As stated by reports, tsunami waves were observed along coastal areas in Aomori Prefecture and Iwate, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders along parts of the Pacific coastline, including regions in Hokkaido.
“Those in coastal or river areas, evacuate right now to high ground and safer areas,” an official alert stated.
According to reports, authorities warned that tsunami waves could reach heights of up to three meters (nearly 10 feet), raising concerns in coastal communities.
Officials also confirmed that no abnormalities have been detected at nuclear facilities in Aomori and Miyagi Prefecture.
As stated by reports, transportation services were disrupted following the quake, including the suspension of bullet train operations between Tokyo and Aomori.
