Bangladesh Requests Iran to Free Blocked Ship at Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) Bangladesh has formally appealed to Iran to guarantee safe passage for one of its flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, the country's Foreign Ministry announced Monday, as a worsening domestic fuel crisis adds urgency to the diplomatic push.

The Bangladesh-flagged vessel, Banglar Joyjatra, remains blocked at the critical waterway — a significant reversal given that Iran had previously granted ships from the South Asian nation exempted passage through the strategically vital route.

The appeal was delivered directly by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman during a pull-aside meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Türkiye, where Rahman urged the Iranian official to use his influence to secure the vessel's release.

"We were very thankful when Iran included Bangladesh among the six countries whose vessels would be permitted to cross Hormuz," Rahman said.

In the same meeting, Rahman reaffirmed Dhaka's carefully calibrated stance on the ongoing regional conflict, stressing the "importance of restraint by all parties and the resolution of differences through dialogue and diplomacy."

The diplomatic friction traces back to early April, when Iran's ambassador to Dhaka, Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi, publicly voiced Tehran's displeasure over Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry statement regarding the US-Israeli war on Iran on April 1. The ambassador stated that Iran would have preferred Bangladesh to explicitly condemn what he characterized as an act of aggression in violation of the UN Charter.

Days later, on April 5, Foreign Minister Rahman met the Iranian ambassador in Dhaka, renewing the call for safe passage for Banglar Joyjatra and a second Bangladesh-bound vessel transporting crude oil.

The urgency of those requests is underscored by a deepening energy crisis gripping Bangladesh, where long lines of vehicles have formed at fuel stations across the country. The government moved to raise both fuel and household gas prices on Sunday in response to the mounting supply crunch.
