Germany’s Navy Plans Possible Strait of Hormuz Mission—Defense Minister

(MENAFN) Germany is preparing contingency scenarios for a potential naval role in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

Speaking to a media outlet, Pistorius said the German navy is “running through the scenarios,” including possible cooperation with international partners and the structure such an operation could take. He added that preliminary planning is a normal part of his responsibilities, even though no decision has been taken.

As stated by reports, Pistorius emphasized that the process remains at an early stage and that several conditions would need to be met before any deployment could proceed. These include a sustained ceasefire in the region, a clear international legal framework, and approval from the German parliament.

He also noted Germany’s naval expertise in mine clearance, saying the country has historically played a leading role within NATO in supporting such operations.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said earlier that Germany is generally open to helping secure maritime transit routes, but stressed that this would require an end to hostilities or at least a temporary ceasefire before any participation could be considered.
