Argentine President Arrives in Israel to Open Embassy in Jerusalem

(MENAFN) Argentine President Javier Milei arrived in Israel on Sunday for an official visit that includes plans to open Argentina’s embassy in Jerusalem, according to Israeli media reports.

As stated by reports, Milei met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday evening, with the two leaders delivering joint statements following their discussions.

The meeting also included the signing of memorandums of understanding covering cooperation in security and artificial intelligence, according to Israeli media outlets.

Reports indicate that during the visit, Milei is expected to formally inaugurate Argentina’s embassy in Jerusalem, marking a major diplomatic shift. The trip represents his third visit to Israel since taking office in December 2023, with his return to Argentina scheduled for Tuesday.

Milei had previously announced plans to relocate the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem during a visit in February 2024 and reaffirmed in November that the opening would take place in the spring.

Currently, only a small number of countries maintain embassies in Jerusalem, including the United States, Kosovo, Honduras, Guatemala, Papua New Guinea, and Paraguay.

Most other countries continue to keep their embassies in Tel Aviv, viewing the relocation to Jerusalem as implying recognition of Israel’s unilateral claim over the city as its capital.
