Iran Pursues Dignified End to US War, Pezeshkian Says

(MENAFN) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared Sunday that Tehran is pursuing an end to its conflict with Washington "with dignity," while pushing back sharply against US President Donald Trump's stance on Iran's nuclear program.

"Trump says Iran should not use its nuclear rights, but does not explain what crime Iran has committed," Pezeshkian said during a visit to Iran's Sports and Youth Ministry, as reported by a news agency.

While signaling a desire for a negotiated resolution, the president struck a defiant tone, urging the Iranian people to stand "firm against a bloodthirsty and brutal enemy."

Pezeshkian was careful to frame Tehran's posture as defensive rather than aggressive, saying the country must navigate the current climate in a way that "does not portray us as war-mongers" — insisting that "we are defending ourselves."

In a striking aside, the president also addressed Iran's women's football team following their performance at last month's Asian Cup, as well as two players who sought asylum in Australia. "Our girls in Australia have delivered a strong blow to the enemy. Those two dear girls who were misled by the enemies are always welcome back whenever they return; our arms are open to them," he said.

The remarks come amid an active — if fragile — diplomatic process. On February 28, the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and other regional nations hosting US military assets. Fighting was suspended on April 8 following Pakistan-mediated ceasefire talks that established a two-week pause in hostilities.

Washington and Tehran held direct negotiations in Pakistan last weekend in pursuit of a more durable peace settlement, with efforts already underway to convene a follow-up session in Islamabad.
