US Lawmakers Probe Incident Involving Rep. Cory Mills After Assault Claim

(MENAFN) US police reportedly came close to arresting Florida Republican Congressman Cory Mills following an assault allegation made by a woman last year, but the effort was halted after she later changed her account, according to a report.

As stated by reports, the Washington Post said officers were preparing to detain Mills after the woman accused him of assault during an incident in 2025. However, a supervising lieutenant reportedly intervened after the woman altered her statement following what appeared to be a conversation with the congressman.

The following day, authorities allegedly attempted to obtain an arrest warrant from then-interim US Attorney Ed Martin, an appointee of President Donald Trump, but the request was denied.

The February 19, 2025, incident is now reportedly part of an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into Mills, who is seeking re-election with Trump’s endorsement.

According to the report, responding officer Richard Mazloom disagreed with the decision by superiors to downgrade the case to a “family disturbance” after the woman recanted her initial claim.

“Unfortunately, I have bosses that are making this into a family disturbance — a domestic disturbance — instead of an actual domestic assault,” Mazloom told the alleged victim.

Prior to changing her statement, the woman reportedly showed officers bruises on her arms and marks on her face, saying Mills had assaulted her during an argument and forced her out of his apartment.

“I just wanted to make record of this because I don’t want it to happen to anyone else,” she said during an interview at a hotel bar hours after the incident, according to the report.
