Brazil’s Lula Calls on UN Security Council to Halt 'War Madness'
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva issued a forceful appeal Saturday for the UN Security Council to immediately intervene and bring an end to what he characterized as "war madness," directing his message squarely at the world's most powerful nations as global conflicts show no sign of abating.
Addressing a gathering in Barcelona, Spain, Lula singled out the five permanent members of the Security Council — the US, China, Russia, France, and the UK — demanding they honor their foundational obligation to uphold international peace.
"Fulfill your obligations to guarantee peace in the world, hold a meeting, and put an end to this war madness, because the world can no longer bear it," Lula said.
The Brazilian leader also revisited a landmark 2010 trilateral diplomatic effort involving Brazil, India, and Türkiye, which sought to place limits on Iran's uranium enrichment activities — an initiative he argued was prematurely dismissed by Western powers.
"When we published the agreement, I imagined they would praise us because Iran would not enrich uranium. What happened?" he said.
"The EU and the US did not accept the agreement, and now they are again spreading the idea that Iran is building an atomic bomb," Lula added, drawing a direct line between that diplomatic failure and U.S. President Donald Trump's rationale for the joint American-Israeli offensive against Iran launched on Feb. 28.
'End that damn embargo on Cuba'
Lula broadened his remarks to address the growing threat of far-right movements, warning that online spaces have become critical battlegrounds that progressive forces cannot afford to cede.
"Fighting on virtual networks is an inevitable task. The far-right shouts, lies and attacks. We must not be afraid to speak with great responsibility to fight them," he said.
Appearing later at the Democracy Defense Summit in Barcelona, Lula turned his attention to Cuba, delivering an unambiguous demand that Washington dismantle its decades-long embargo against the island nation.
"End that damn embargo on Cuba and allow the Cuban people to live their lives in peace," he said.
Dismissing the embargo as an instrument of futility, Lula argued that generations of American sanctions had yielded nothing of substance.
"Yes, there are problems in Cuba, but those are their problems. It is not Lula's, not Trump's, nor the empire of the moment. So what did this achieve? Nothing.
"Cubans are still there, standing and resisting as best they can. They are only waiting for the world to finally allow them to breathe once," he said.
