Rubio to Take Part in Israel–Lebanon Peace Talks at State Department
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to take part in direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon at the State Department on Tuesday, according to an official schedule.
Rubio will host Israeli ambassador Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad at 11 a.m. local time, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement between the two sides.
The meeting is expected to mark the formal start of direct talks between Israel and Lebanon, representing some of the most high-level engagement between the two countries in decades.
Discussions are anticipated to center on establishing a ceasefire, addressing the disarmament of Hezbollah, and exploring a wider political settlement.
The talks are taking place against the backdrop of continued fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces have expanded their air and ground operations following the war with Iran, with reports indicating more than 2,000 deaths and around one million people displaced since early March.
Hezbollah has rejected the planned Washington-based negotiations, describing them as “futile” and urging Lebanon’s government instead to focus on countering Israeli “aggression.”
