Prehistoric Altar With Human Remains Discovered In Central Mexico
A salvage excavation tied to a new passenger rail line between Querétaro and Mexico City has brought an unexpected find to light: a 1,000-year-old stone altar, along with human remains and ritual objects, in central Mexico's Tula Archaeological Monument Zone.
The discovery was made in March during work in Hidalgo, at a site associated with the Toltec civilization, according to Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). Archaeologists uncovered a three-level altar measuring about three feet on each side, built from andesite, river stones, and basalt. Nearby, they found four human skulls, several long bones believed to be femurs, a black ceramic bowl, obsidian fragments, and several blades.
Officials say the assemblage may point to sacrificial activity. Víctor Francisco Heredia Guillén, who is overseeing the project, told INAH that the remains are likely connected to body parts offered as sacrifices. The bones will be examined further by a state laboratory in Mexico, which is expected to determine additional details such as age, sex, and possibly cause or method of death.
Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Mexico's secretary of culture, said the find adds to understanding of“one of the great civilizations of Mesoamerica” and underscored the state's responsibility to investigate, safeguard, and transmit archaeological heritage to future generations.
The altar adds a new layer to the record of Tula, one of the most important Toltec centers in Mesoamerica. Finds like this are especially significant because they emerge not from a planned dig, but from infrastructure work that can expose buried histories before they are lost. In this case, a modern rail project has opened a direct window onto a ritual landscape that has remained hidden for centuries.
