Elizabeth Selig
- Deputy Director, Center for Ocean Solutions, Stanford University
My work lies at the intersection of environmental and social sustainability in marine ecosystems. Current research foci include understanding social-ecological feedbacks in ocean health, marine resource conflicts, and patterns in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) and labor abuses in fisheries. For the last several years, I have been a part of the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) science team, working with companies to transition to more sustainable practices across their supply chains.
My Ph.D. in Ecology at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill focused on how global climate change may affect coral reef health and which management strategies can be useful for mitigating coral loss. I have more than 10 years of experience working with international non-governmental organizations including Conservation International, where I was the Senior Director of Marine Science. I have also worked at the Smithsonian Institution and the World Resources Institute.
I was a lead author on the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Global Assessment. I am part of the International Science Advisory Council for the Stockholm Resilience Centre.
