China Urges Free Passage in Strait of Hormuz After US Announcement
(MENAFN) China has urged that maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz remain open and uninterrupted, responding to reports that the United States has moved ahead with a blockade targeting Iranian-linked shipping routes.
According to statements from China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, the strait represents a crucial artery for global trade and energy flows, and its stability is considered essential for the wider international community.
He emphasized that maintaining smooth passage through the waterway is in everyone’s shared interest, noting that any disruption to shipping has broader consequences beyond the immediate region. “The Strait of Hormuz is an important route for global supplies and energy trade. Keeping it stable and safe and unimpeded serves interests of international community,” he said.
Guo added that the current disruption stems from ongoing conflict in the region, and argued that resolving tensions through a ceasefire is the only sustainable path forward. He stressed that all parties should avoid escalation and instead focus on de-escalation and dialogue.
“All sides should remain calm, exercise restraint,” he said, while also stating that China is prepared to help support energy security and maintain supply chain stability if needed.
He further reiterated that the priority must be restoring peace in the Middle East, and warned that continued confrontation risks further destabilizing global energy markets.
Regarding wider geopolitical discussions, he also responded to remarks about US pressure on other countries over energy trade, defending the sovereignty of states in choosing their own economic partnerships without external interference.
As reported, China’s position comes shortly after the US announced a naval blockade affecting Iranian maritime access, a move that has triggered international concern over potential impacts on global shipping and energy prices.
