David Geffen Divorce Ends In Settlement Following Claims Of Hidden Wealth

A private settlement has brought an end to the divorce between billionaire entertainment mogul and art collector David Geffen, 83, and his estranged husband, David Armstrong, 33, after months of unusually visible legal conflict. The financial terms were not disclosed, but the case had already drawn attention for its combination of wealth, no prenuptial agreement, and sharply contested claims about support and lifestyle.

The marriage lasted less than two years, yet the dispute quickly expanded beyond a routine separation. Armstrong, who also used the name Donovan Michaels, argued in court filings that Geffen was trying to limit spousal support while he maintained a standard of living he said once exceeded $3 million a month. Geffen responded that he had already provided substantial assistance, including hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments and a New York apartment.

The conflict widened further when Armstrong filed, and later withdrew, a civil lawsuit accusing Geffen of exploitation. Geffen's legal team rejected those allegations.

Once that lawsuit was withdrawn, the case returned to its core financial questions: spousal support and division of assets. Even so, the absence of a prenup and the scale of Geffen's wealth meant that a short marriage could still carry significant financial consequences.

The settlement now ends a dispute that, for a time, offered a rare public glimpse into the private mechanics of one of Hollywood's most discreet billionaire collectors. Its timing is also notable. The agreement arrives just ahead of the opening of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's new building, the David Geffen Galleries, placing a personal legal resolution beside a major institutional milestone in Los Angeles.
